The Firefly is a block similar in appearance to the Cicada. However, while they are found in the same place and look similar, they serve two very different functions: the Firefly illuminates light (a light level of 15, the highest possible block or skylight level) whereas the Cicada serves as a noisemaker to the player. The Firefly is found on trees in the Twilight Forest, usually at high elevations, making it a tricky challenge to get to but a possibly rewarding venture as Fireflies give off the maximum possible light level.
The Firefly can be placed in a Glass Bottle to create a Firefly Jar; however, the Firefly Jar only gives off a light level of 8, which hostile mobs can spawn in. Thus, a Firefly Jar does not serve as a method of mob spawn prevention, merely as a method of aesthetic lighting that does not prevent mob spawns. If Fireflies are desired as a method of lighting areas, caves, etc., then they should not be placed in jars and kept in block form to ensure maximum possible lighting potential.
