A Peat Bog will maintain an area of 15x6x15 (X-Y-Z) with a 9x9 hollow center centered on the Peat Bog. It requires Bog Earth for operation and produces Dirt as waste. Dirt is automatically ejected into attached Transport Pipes or into adjacent chests. It needs to be powered by a BuildCraft Engine. Or any other source of MJ power. Placing any block directly above the Bog Earth layer will stop it from replacing the Dirt blocks. This includes light sources from a Wrathlamp and flowers generated from an Apiary (Forestry). No longer available on the newest version of Forestry 2.3.1.1
A Turbary can be used to harvest the peat. A single Turbary can harvest two Peat Bog if they are stacked vertically.
One Peat Bog can produce enough Peat to directly power 11 to 12 Peat-fired Engines.
A Peat Bog will consume much more power than it actually requires to keep running. A single Peat-Fired Engine is enough to keep it running. Restricting it's power this way allows for more efficient power generation.
A Peat Bog and an Arboretum work well together, as the Arboretum generates sand as a byproduct needed by the peat bog, while the peat bog generates surplus dirt the Arboretum needs in producing Humus. If you power your forestry machines with Peat-fired Engines, the Ash generated can also be used in creating Fertilizer for humus.

Pipes
When using BuildCraft pipes or Pneumatic Tubes, bog earth can be inserted into the Peat Bog from the top and bottom, while dirt is ejected from the sides.
