Backpacks are portable storage items added by Forestry and other supported mods. They expand the player's carrying capacity and offer predefined item filtering, automatic pickup, quick storage and hotbar refill depending on mode. Each type of Backpack is named according to the assigned item grouping that it may receive. Mod-specific backpacks exist for Thaumcraft 4, Railcraft and ComputerCraft.
Controls
To open the Backpack, place it on the hotbar and right-click while selected. Cycle through the modes by crouching, and then right-clicking with the Backpack selected in the hotbar. In any mode but Receiving, Shift-right clicking on a chest will dump all items out of the pack, space permitting.
Forestry Backpacks have four different modes:
- Default - Automatically takes any compatible items that enter the player's inventory until full. (no added icon)
Config
Additional items can be added to most Backpacks default lists by editing /minecraft/config/forestry/backpacks.cfg, or the supporting mod's config file for ones added by different mod. The Lepidopterist and Apiarist backpacks cannot be edited, while Adventurer is useless until edited.
The command /mt hand (MineTweaker) or /ct hand (CraftTweaker) will output the item ID of a held item to the chat window in-game if installed, otherwise F3+H will turn on advanced tooltips. Backpack configs also accept oredict entries and wildcards. Config files must be in sync between the client and the server in SMP.

Note
- Basic Backpacks hold up to 15 stacks of Items
- Woven Backpacks hold up to 45 stacks of Items
- Basic Backpacks may be upgraded into Woven Backpacks using a Carpenter
- Forestry Backpacks will only pick-up drops, this may cause some inconveniences when mining with a Wand of Equal Trade or other tools that directly insert into the player's inventory. A work around is to manually drop stacks of items for the Backpack to pick-up
