Vanilla Overhaul

BetterStorage is a mod by copygirl and Vic Nightfall that adds more storage options to Minecraft. It is built to fit alongside vanilla content and also works as a stand-alone mod or together with other mods. The mod made its first appearance in Minecraft 1.5.2 as part of the Hexxit modpack.

Storage Blocks

The mod adds several alternatives to the vanilla Chest. Storage crates form a shared pile across every crate connected to them: each crate adds 18 slots to the pile, and opening any crate shows a randomized selection of stacks from the pile rather than an ordered inventory. Lockers work like chests but combine into a double inventory when stacked vertically instead of side by side. Reinforced chests add 12 slots over a vanilla chest and are immune to explosion damage, which makes them safe to leave out in the open near Creepers or other blasts; their material only changes their color. Reinforced lockers behave the same way as reinforced chests but follow the locker's vertical pairing rule.

Backpacks

Backpacks are worn on the player's back and act as a portable chest rather than as extra hotbar or inventory slots. The player places a backpack on the ground to equip it by sneak-clicking, opens it with a keybind, and drops it again by sneak-using with an empty hand. A backpack also drops on death without losing its contents, so it can be used as a small emergency stash. Specialty variants extend this with linked storage and mod-specific contents.

Locks and Keys

The mod adds a lock that can be attached to most BetterStorage containers and to a lockable iron door. A container fitted with a lock can only be opened by a player carrying a matching key, and several keys can be bound together into a keyring to avoid clutter. Master keys open any lock the player has crafted but are expensive to make, so they are usually kept for emergencies rather than for everyday use.

Cardboard

Cardboard sheets, crafted from paper, are used to assemble a full set of armor, every tool type, and a cardboard box. The armor and tools are extremely fragile and do almost no damage or mining, but they can be useful as cheap throwaway gear or for novelty. Cardboard boxes act as small portable inventories that survive being dropped.

Other

The mod also adds a Crafting Table alternative that keeps its grid contents between uses, an armor stand for displaying full sets of armor, a drinking helmet that lets the player sip stored potions hands-free, and a handful of festive items such as presents and a holiday book.
