Iron Chests is a mod created by cpw. This mod adds a variety of new chests and shulker boxes to the game in addition to iron chests. All are better than vanilla chests and boxes in that they have more capacity and can be placed next to each other[1]. However, they are single chests only, and cannot be combined to create double chests. Only obsidian chests and boxes have increased blast resistance.
Since Minecraft 1.13, Shulker Boxes have been moved to a separate mod, Iron Shulker Boxes.

DirtChest 9000!
Capacity: 1 Inventory slot
DirtChest 9000! can hold up to one stack of dirt. It will not hold any other item; however, it comes with a user manual inside it when made. This manual cannot be replaced in the chest if removed. Has no damage value, so be careful where you place it!

Capacity: 45 Inventory slots
Iron
Capacity: 54 Inventory slots
Silver
Capacity: 72 Inventory slots
Gold
Capacity: 81 Inventory slots
Diamond
Capacity: 108 Inventory slots
Obsidian Chest
Capacity: 108 Inventory slots; Also blast resistant.
Crystal Chest
Capacity: 108 inventory slots (transparent); may cause lag on servers.

There are also upgrades that you can apply to your existing chests by right-clicking to increase their capacity.
