Rods can be used to make pistons any size, so long as they are not out of render distance. They will connect to other rods, Extensions, and parts from two sides like this. Rods can be placed inside pistons and RodFolders.

Rods also act like multiparts, allowing multiple to be in one block. Up to three can be in the same block, creating a six-sided rod block. Please note that actual multiparts do not interface with rods.
