Mechanic Pistons are modular versions of vanilla pistons. When placed, notice that they don't have an extension (pistonhead). That's because they are modular!
Rightclicking with a rod or extension will place them inside the piston. Shift-Rightclicking with an empty hand will remove the rod or extension. The piston can't push without a rod behind it to give it length to push out, like frames.
Unlike vanilla pistons, mechanic pistons won't retrieve when redstone power is removed. Place another mechanic piston facing the opposite direction to pull everything back.
