The Thaumometer is one of the most useful and important tools in a thaumaturgist's arsenal, second only to the wand. Firstly it allows you to scan objects, creatures or mystical phenomena and determine their magical make-up - their Aspects.
Secondly it makes discovering nodes easier, as they become clearly visible if viewed through the Thaumometer's lens - even through solid objects!
To use the thaumometer, hold it in your hand and look at the object you're interested in. Magical nodes will appear as small glowing spheres of light.
When looking at an object or mob, you will see its name near the top of the thaumometer screen. Hold the right mouse button for a number of seconds to scan the object or mob. You'll hear a clicking noise like a camera shutter and get a tickertape message in the bottom right corner (of your computer, not the thaumometer screen). The message can be of 3 types:
- nothing can be learned here
- to understand this you need to research x (where x is what's required, eg man, the mind, things that move)
- which aspects have been revealed.
3 is what you want. You'll see icons for the aspects in the centre of the thaumometer and the first time you look at an object or mob, they will also float to your journeymap, to land on the Research Table.
If you look at that item again, you'll see the aspect icons, and you'll also see them if the item is in your inventory and you hover over with the mouse while holding the shift key.
Note: you need to look at everything. For example, Oak wood is different to Oak plank is different to Oak slab. Green glass is different to blue glass.
Note: Any kind of elemental shard may be used.
