Just Dire Things is a mod developed by Direwolf20, adding new resources, tools, armor, machines and movement options to the game. The mod is organized around a four-tier material progression unlocked by visiting all three vanilla dimensions, and is glued together by a "goo" mechanic that turns common world resources into rarer mod-specific ones through controlled spreading and refinement.

Progression

The mod's resource progression runs Ferricore, Blazegold, Celestigem, Eclipse Alloy. Ferricore is gated on the Overworld, Blazegold and Voidflame on the Nether, and Celestigem and Eclipse Alloy on the End. Each tier produces a full kit of tools, weapons and armor with that tier's stats baked into the material itself, and tools at a tier accept a different selection of slottable upgrades than the tier below it. The smithing-template family (Template: Blazegold, Template: Celestigem, Template: Eclipse Alloy) lets a player upgrade an existing tool to the next tier on a Smithing Table rather than recrafting from scratch, preserving its installed upgrades.

Goo

The mod's central mechanic is "goo". Goo comes in four tiers (Blazebloom, Primogel, Shadowpulse, VoidShimmer) corresponding to the four material tiers. Each tier of goo can be applied to the matching soil block, where it slowly spreads and ferments. Goo soils accept bonemeal, so the loop can be force-grown when raw goo blocks need to be harvested in bulk.

Goo blocks act as the input for two key transformations:

  • Ore generation: a vanilla block placed next to a goo block of the matching tier slowly converts into one of the mod's raw ore variants. This is how all of the mod's ore blocks are obtained, since the mod does not generate them in worldgen.
  • Fuel refinement: the mod's unrefined liquid fuels (Unrefined Blaze Ember Fuel, Unrefined Voidflame Fuel, Unrefined Eclipse Ember Fuel) become their refined counterparts after a goo-driven processing step. Refined fuels burn hotter in the Simple Fuel Generator than their unrefined source.

The same goo loop also produces miscellaneous catalyst items such as the Polymorphic Catalyst and Portal Fluid Catalyst, which are needed to make certain wands and portal tools.

Power and fluids

Just Dire Things uses Forge Energy (FE) for power. The mod ships its own generators:

  • Simple Coal Generator Simple Coal Generator burns furnace fuels and runs faster on the mod's higher-tier coals (Primal Coal, Blaze Ember, Voidflame Coal, Eclipse Ember), which apply 2×, 4×, 8× and 16× burn-speed multipliers.
  • Simple Fuel Generator Simple Fuel Generator runs on the refined liquid fuels produced by the goo loop and is significantly denser per millibucket than the coal generator.
  • Pocket Generator Pocket Generator does the same job in the player's inventory, ticking energy into any tool or armor piece that still has room while the player carries it.

Power can be moved with the Energy Transmitter, which pushes FE wirelessly to a bound machine. Custom liquid storage is handled in the Fluid Canister and the matching pickup wands and tools have built-in tanks for their own fluid type (polymorphic, portal, time).

Automation

Automation in Just Dire Things is organized in pairs: a Simple tier with one fixed target position and a redstone control mode, and an Advanced tier with a configurable cuboid area, a whitelist or blacklist filter and a Forge Energy cost per action. The full pair set covers block breaking and placing, fluid collection and placement, clicking, dropping, sensing and dimension-aware block swapping.

Three other automation blocks fill specific roles:

  • Item Collector Item Collector vacuums loose items into a target inventory using a filter and an adjustable area.
  • Inventory Holder Inventory Holder stores a full 41-slot player kit as a world block, with separate filter rules for hand and pipe access.
  • Player Accessor Player Accessor binds to its placer's UUID and exposes that player's hotbar, main inventory, armor or offhand to pipes on a per-side basis.
  • Paradox Machine Paradox Machine snapshots a cuboid of raw ores and entities, then restores that snapshot at the cost of Time Fluid and FE. Pushing it too hard risks spawning the hostile Paradox.

Tools, weapons and armor

Every tool, weapon and bow has empty ability slots that accept the mod's upgrade items (mining, scanning, sorting, attack and movement upgrades). Different tool families accept different upgrade sets, with the higher tier accepting a strict superset of the lower tier. Most higher-tier tools draw Forge Energy from an internal buffer to power their abilities, and the Blazegold-tier tools can be repaired by dropping them into a Lava source instead of being destroyed.

Armor pieces also accept upgrade slots, covering passive effects (night vision, water breathing, step assist) and active ones (flight, elytra glide, ground stomp). Combining a full armor set unlocks set-tier behavior identical to the tool side of the family.

The mod's wand line covers movement and utility rather than mining. The Blazejet Wand launches the player in the look direction with no fall damage, the Voidshift Wand adds a short-range teleport, and the Eclipsegate Wand adds a temporary block-phasing ability on top of both. The Polymorphic Wand line converts mobs into other mobs of the same disposition, with the advanced version able to target a specific saved species. The Time Wand portably reproduces the acceleration effect of Time Crystal Blocks by speeding up ticking blocks for 30 seconds at a time. The Portal Gun line fires paired blue/orange portals, with the advanced version adding a saved-favorite menu of fixed coordinates.

Time

A separate progression line is built around time crystals. The Budding Time Crystal Block grows Time Crystal Clusters on its sides, but only after being walked through the Overworld, Nether and End in sequence to advance through its three maturity stages. Mature blocks also drive the Time Crystal Block, which accelerates ticking blocks in its neighborhood, and the Time Wand, which does the same on demand. Time Fluid is the liquid form of the resource and is what powers the Paradox Machine and the Time Wand.
