Budding Amethyst is a block from vanilla Minecraft. It is the only block in the game that grows Amethyst Clusters, which can be mined for Amethyst Shards.
Budding amethyst spawns naturally inside amethyst geodes, large hollow pockets found underground that are lined with Amethyst Blocks and calcite. The block cannot be obtained as an item: breaking it drops nothing, even with silk touch, and any attempt to push it with a piston shatters it in place. Once a geode is discovered, the budding blocks already inside it are the player's permanent supply.
Growth
Every random tick, a budding amethyst block has a chance to grow an amethyst bud on one of its six sides, provided the adjacent space is air or water. The bud then advances through four stages as more random ticks land on it:
- Small Amethyst Bud appears first.
- Medium Amethyst Bud once the small bud advances.
- Large Amethyst Bud as the next step.
- Amethyst Cluster is the final stage. Only the full cluster drops shards when broken.
Earlier bud stages drop nothing on their own unless mined with a silk touch tool. A fully grown cluster mined with any iron-tier or better pickaxe drops four Amethyst Shards, while a non-pickaxe break or a wrong tool drops nothing.
Each face of a budding block grows independently, so a single block can sprout up to six clusters at once. Surrounding a budding block with open space on every side maximizes throughput in an amethyst farm.
Usage
Budding Amethyst has no known uses in crafting.
