The Charm of Keeping is one of the two types of Charms that are added by the Twilight Forest mod. The purpose of the Charm of Keeping is to preserve the player's inventory upon death. All three of the charms appear as a sort of "padlock" sprite that indicates that the Charm attempts to lock the player's items and return the items upon respawn. Charms of Keeping can be found as loot in chests in Hollow Hills and Labyrinths as well as from a Maze Slime as a rare drop, and rarely in Wells or Ruins.
Each of the Charms attempts to preserve a different quantity of the player's inventory upon death. Any items that are not protected by the Charm will be dropped at the player's point of death. The Charm of Keeping I attempts to preserve all of the player's four armor pieces and whatever item the player currently has selected. The Charm of Keeping II attempts to preserve all of the player's four armor pieces and the player's hotbar. The Charm of Keeping III attempts to preserve the entirety of the player's inventory.
It is important to note that items can only be returned to the player by a Charm of Keeping if the player selects Respawn subsequent to dying. If the player selects Save and Quit to Title after dying, the item memory will be lost and the Charm will not function. If the player does click Respawn, then two Charm of Keeping IIIs will swirl around the player's head for a few seconds, indicating that items have been saved by the Charm. Items will be returned to the player and the player can continue adventuring.
Even if the player has more than one Charm of Keeping on his/her person or more than one type of Charm of Keeping, only one Charm will be used when the player dies. The Charm with the highest value will always be used; for example, if one of each type of Charm of Keeping are present, then the Charm of Keeping III will always be used, and no Charm will function if a Charm with a higher tier than it is present.
Four Charm of Keeping can be combined to make a single Charm of Keeping II, and four Charm of Keeping IIs can be combined to make a single Charm of Keeping III. Thus, one Charm of Keeping III is worth 16 Charm of Keeping Is. It is important to note that this process is non-reversible and charms cannot be broken down into smaller charm denominations.
The Charm of Keeping will function whether it is in the player's inventory or on the player's hotbar.
